Speculations regarding who will succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield has lost momentum in recent weeks after Ruben Amorim emerged as the hot favourite.
Michael Edwards is said to be a huge fan of the Portuguese tactician, amid reports Liverpool have placed a three-year contract on the table for the Sporting CP boss to sign.
At this stage, it feels like the man from Lisbon is bound to join Liverpool.
Now – however – Ruben Amorim has cast some doubt over his expected move to Anfield, suggesting that somebody very important to him does not want the switch to happen.
Ruben Amorim admits his son does not want him to leave Sporting CP
Well, the 39-year-old has now revealed that his son does not want him to leave Sporting CP.
When asked what Sporting CP fans ask for more between Amorim staying in Lisbon or winning the Primeira Liga title again this season, the Liverpool target told SIC Noticias:
“Both. Even my son asks me for both things, but the important thing is for Sporting to be champions. That’s what the fans want and that’s what we fight for.”
The Sporting CP boss was born in Lisbon – as was his son, presumably – so there is a strong family connection with the Portuguese giants, and any move to Liverpool this summer will therefore be an emotional decision.
Amorim currently has Sporting CP sat seven points clear of Benfica at the summit of the Primeira Liga with just five games remaining.
It represents a remarkable turnaround from the 2022/23 campaign, which saw Sporting CP finish fourth in Portugal’s top-flight.
Signs of Jurgen Klopp 2.0
On that above note, a comparison with Klopp could be made.
The German’s cycle at Liverpool looked to be ending last season as the Reds finished fifth in the Premier League.
However, Klopp rebuilt his Liverpool side into challengers in the space of just one summer, bringing key men such as Alexis Mac Allister to Anfield while also readjusting his tactics slightly with the use of an inverted full-back.
Amorim also transformed his side’s fortunes in the summer of 2023, and as he aims to appease fans by delivering another title, the Portuguese coach certainly draws some parallels to the man from Stuttgart.
