Jack Wilshere Names Liverpool Legend As The Greatest Midfielder Of All Time

Former Arsenal and West Ham player Jack Wilshere has rated Steven Gerrard as the best midfielder who ever played the game.

Wilshere came up against the Liverpool legend on numerous occasions during his playing days and, when asked who he regards as the greatest ever to play in midfield, he replied:

“Stevie G [Steven Gerrard]. Most complete. If you ask me, who is my favourite midfielder, it might’ve been a different answer, maybe an [Andres] Iniesta-type, [Kevin] De Bruyne-type.”

Gerrard played 710 games over the course of his time with the Reds and he was very prolific in front of goal despite regularly playing in much deeper positions on the pitch.

The England international hit double figures in 10 of the 17 seasons he spent as a professional at Anfield, scoring 20 or more in two of those campaigns.

While some have argued that Gerrard should have won more silverware during his career, he did win his fair share of winners’ medals.

The midfielder won two FA Cups, three League Cups, the Community Shield, the UEFA Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Champions League.

That legendary night in 2005, in particular, will live long in the memory, as will the ‘Gerrard final’ in 2006 when he helped guide his team to a famous FA Cup win over West Ham.

The former Liverpool midfielder’s status as one of the greats of the game was given full recognition when he was named as one of the eight inaugural inductees for the Premier League Hall of Fame back in 2021.

Gerrard was included alongside Arsenal’s Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp, Manchester United trio Roy Keane, Eric Cantona and David Beckham, Newcastle’s Alan Shearer and Chelsea’s Frank Lampard.
