Manchester United make ‘initial contact’ with club over signing of Liverpool target

Recent reports have indicated that Manchester United have made ‘initial contact’ with a club regarding the signing of a player who is also a target for Liverpool.

Since the opening of the transfer window last week, the Reds have experienced a relatively quiet start in the market, which comes as no surprise.

With significant changes occurring behind the scenes at Anfield, including the arrival of Arne Slot, coupled with the ongoing European Championship and Copa America this summer, a subdued beginning was expected.

Currently, Liverpool have 14 players away on international duty, all of whom will miss the start of pre-season.

Consequently, Slot’s initial starting XIs this summer are likely to differ significantly from his first official selection at Ipswich Town on August 17.

Liverpool’s priority this summer appears to be securing a centre-back, with additional signings anticipated.

They have shown interest in Lille defender Leny Yoro, although Real Madrid appear to be leading the race for his signature.

Recently, there have also been links with Italian centre-half Riccardo Calafiori, following his performances at Euro 2024.

In addition to Yoro and Calafiori, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing David Hancko and Waldemar Anton as potential defensive reinforcements.

Centre-back could be a position of focus for Liverpool this summer, especially following the departure of Joel Matip.

Lille defender Leny Yoro remains a primary target for Liverpool, despite interest from other top clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.

According to Sky Sports, “Manchester United have made initial contact with Lille over the signing of central defender Leny Yoro.

“Yoro, 18, is among a number of young centre-backs United are looking at.

“Jarrad Branthwaite remains a primary target – but as yet, there is no indication from Everton that their £70m asking price will be reduced.”

Centre-back is considered a top priority for Man United, especially with Raphael Varane departing as a free agent at the end of the month.

Additionally, Victor Lindelof has attracted interest from Turkish club Fenerbahce.

Real Madrid are favourite to complete a deal for Yoro after reportedly having some form of agreement with the 18-year-old.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool ‘will be there’ if the deal between Leny Yoro and Real Madrid does not materialize.
