The Houston Astros trade of Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs last week marked the blockbuster deal of the offseason, and plenty of Houston fans were despondent over the exit of the franchise’s best player. One Houston legend didn’t exactly join the chorus of criticism after a weekend of reflection.
Former Astros ace and three-time MLB All-Star Roy Oswalt weighed in Monday with his take on Houston’s return in exchange for Tucker. The franchise received highly-touted minor-league bat Cam Smith as well as MLB starting pitcher Hayden Wesneski and corner infielder Isaac Paredes, the latter of whom could thrive in the hitter-friendly confinues of Daikin Park—at least if you ask Oswalt.
“Looking back on the Kyle Tucker trade, I like it and think it makes a lot of sense for the Astros,” Oswalt wrote.
“Isaac Paredes fits perfectly at Daikin Park and Wesneski has a lot of potential.”
Oswalt began dabbling into the world of baseball takery like the rest of us in recent months, though he doesn’t appear to be quite inside the organization at the moment like Jeff Bagwell, the former Houston slugger and current advisor to team owner Jim Crane.
And while Oswalt likely enjoys a stress-free holiday season, Crane and the Astros’ brain trust can’t quite say the same. Alex Bregman’s free agency continues to loom over the organization, and both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox could offer Bregman a contract near or surpassing $200 million.
Trading Tucker, adding pieces and retaining Bregman would complete an unconventional, though reasonable winter for Houston. Lose Bregman shortly after dealing Tucker, and the dynasty by all accounts will be effectively over.
We don’t know whether Bregman’s next MLB at-bats will come at Daikin Park, Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium or a mystery locale. We do know Tucker’s home games in 2025 will be played on the north side of Chicago at Wrigley Field, with his return to Houston set for the Chicago Cubs’ trip south on June 27.
