Both Liverpool and Arsenal got the chequebook out in the summer and splashed the cash on their squad.
Some pushed the boat out more than others, with Arsenal breaking their club-record transfer for Declan Rice, as well as the much-talked-about transfer of Kai Havertz.
On the other hand, Liverpool’s big money went on Dominik Szoboszlai, a player who Darren Bent thinks has been one of the signings of the summer, as he told talkSPORT.
Added to that, the former striker added that Liverpool’s all-action midfielder has ‘that panache’ to his game and he is in no doubt that he has been ‘better’ than Kai Havertz, even though he was told that the Arsenal forward has ‘better stats’ this season.
Even before a ball was kicked, there was a lot of noise, mostly negative, about Mikel Arteta wanting to bring in Kai Havertz from Chelsea.
There was huge excitement about Dominik Szoboszlai, as those moods have now been translated into their performances.
“I like Szoboszlai,” said Bent. “I think he has got that panache about him. A bit of X-factor. I like watching him play. Gets on the ball. Makes things happen. I think he has been a good signing.
On Havertz having a better stats record than Szoboszlai: “I can tell you now that Szoboszlai has been better than Havertz.”
Liverpool’s track record in the transfer market over the years has been pretty strong and it has continued that way with Szoboszlai.
The all-round package. That bite, power and energy Liverpool were missing from the middle of the pitch has now returned to the table.
Some need 12 months to settle down, not Szoboszlai, who is mirroring his manager out on the pitch already.
