Football Pundit Steve Nicol has claimed there’s a winger in Manchester City who’s capable of terrifying Liverpool in defence.
Man City signed Jeremy Doku this summer from French club Rennes. The Belgian can be a huge challenge for Trent Alexander-Arnold to deal with.
With the latest international break over, Liverpool will be travelling to Etihad to face City as Premier League resumes in action.
Owing to this fixture, Nicol highlights the individual battle that could be a headache for Jurgen Klopp. Speaking in a recent podcast on ESPN FC, the pundit said,
“I think we know what City are going to do, but what I don’t know is what Liverpool’s backline is going to do. I can’t get away from that.
“But there’s one in particular that scares the life out of me. If he plays Doku against Trent Alexander-Arnold, that is it.
“If there’s anything to come out of the Chelsea game, I thought Doku was poor. I think everyone was expecting because of the previous week, this guy is going to light it up again and I thought he was pretty average. So maybe that goes into Pep’s mind.
“At the same time, if I’m Pep, I look at Trent and I look at Doku and this is a complete mismatch defensively so that’s what I’m worried about.”
Manchester City signed the Belgian for £55m in the summer transfer window this season. Since then, the winger has been a revelation at Etihad.
He has scored three goals and provided six assists in 14 games in all competitions so far. Moreover, he is currently the joint-highest total of successful taken ons in the league.
It shows why Nicol is concerned about Trent Alexander-Arnold facing him. The Englishman is already criticized at times for his defensive abilities some times.
He has been able to tackle only 34.8% of the dribblers he has come up against. Owing to all these, Doku will surely have a good time facing Alexander-Arnold.
