Liverpool visit Turf Moor to face Burnley in the Premier League on Boxing Day as they search for a late Christmas present.
The Reds faced a tough clash with Arsenal in their last Premier League meeting, but Burnley should pose less of a threat than Mikel Arteta’s side.
Liverpool haven’t met the Clarets since the 2021/22 season, enjoying a 1-0 victory on their last visit to Turf Moor thanks to a sole Fabinho goal.
Vincent Kompany’s side are struggling for points in the Premier League and will undoubtedly be fighting relegation come the end of the season.
The kind of fixture Liverpool have struggled in during recent seasons, there is no room for error against Burnley on Tuesday.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Burnley.
Liverpool do enjoy a long history against the Clarets, facing them in 126 games since the two clubs first clashed in 1894. Of said meetings, the Reds have won 59, drawn 29 and lost 38, although only 16 matches have come in the Premier League.
Liverpool boast a strong record against Burnley in recent years, winning 12 of their past 16 encounters. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won their last three without conceding, but did lose 1-0 to Tuesday’s opponents at Anfield in 2021.
The Reds haven’t lost at Turf Moor since 2016, winning their last five visits to Lancashire.
Liverpool took another couple of injury blows from their top of the table clash with Arsenal on the weekend, putting extra stress on selection ahead of the trip to Burnley.
Kostas Tsimikas is facing a long-term injury lay-off after suffering a broken collarbone, while Luis Diaz was also forced off against the Gunners with a suspected knee issue.
Despite nearing respective returns, Alexis Mac Allister and Diogo Jota are expected to miss out as they continue their recoveries.
Long-term absentees Joel Matip, Thiago, Ben Doak, Andy Robertson and Stefan Bajcetic will be also missing for Klopp.
Amidst the busy festive period, rotation has to be expected from Klopp’s side. Jarell Quansah could step into defence in place of Ibrahima Konate, while Joe Gomez will all but definitely fill in for the injured Tsimikas.
After a fantastic outing against the Gunners, Klopp could very well stick with Curtis Jones in the midfield, while you can also expect a return to the side for Darwin Nunez – who started the Arsenal game on the bench.
(4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Gomez; Endo, Jones, Szoboszlai; Salah, Gakpo, Nunez.
Liverpool are in dire need of getting back to winning ways after suffering two frustrating draws at the hands of Manchester United and Arsenal.
However, the Reds have a patchy record against newly promoted sides this season, looking far from convincing in either of their trips to Sheffield United or Luton Town.
Expect another cagey outing – but given Burnley’s struggles, you would hope Liverpool will get this one over the line.
