Jurgen Klopp plays down Liverpool chances of signing Kylian Mbappe

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has underrated the chances of the Merseyside club securing the services of Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe in the summer.

The 25-year-old made the permanent switch from Monaco to the French champions in June 2018 and has since bagged 222 goals in 246 competitive appearances.

Mbappe was on hand with a clinical strike as PSG beat Spanish side Real Sociedad 2-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday night, meaning Les Parisiens now have on foot in the quarter-finals.

The attacker also possesses incredible international, having netted 46 times in 75 caps for France, helping his country to World Cup glory in 2018.

Out of the Premier League contingent, Liverpool have been linked with Mbappe the most over the past few seasons, however a move to Anfield for the star is unlikely.

Reds boss Klopp has further played down the club’s chances of sealing the services of the Frenchman in the near future, citing financial reasons as a significant barrier to access of one of football’s biggest names.

“Obviously, I’m not involved in that (Mbappe signing), but I can tell you I’d be surprised if all the top clubs were,” Klopp said ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

“The top clubs I know, for most of them it will be tricky – wages, signing-on fee.”

As Klopp alludes to, it is understood that Mbappe’s wage demands would price the majority of clubs out of a move for the player’s signature.

This is even despite the 25-year-old potentially leaving PSG on a free transfer in the summer when his contract at Parc des Princes expires.

It has been widely reported that Mbappe has informed the club and his teammates that he will end his seven-year stay at the French champions at the conclusion of the term.

Moves away from the French capital have been close for Mbappe in recent years, including last year, when the player himself snubbed a switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal after PSG had accepted a £265m offer.

Luis Enrique’s could extend the forward’s deal in the French capital for a further 12 months, allowing them to earn money from a sale in the summer.

Real Madrid is understood to be the most-likely destination for Mbappe, with Carlo Ancelotti’s holding a long-term interest in the 75-time international.
