Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has given young winger Mateo Mejia the chance to train with the first team following Marcus Rashford’s injury.
Rashford suffered a groin strain in the 2-0 Premier League win against Everton and then lost the 2-2 draw against Sevilla in the Europa League.
The 25-year-old is unlikely to return for tomorrow’s trip to Nottingham Forest and this could be an opportunity for one of the Academy graduates to join the squad.
Mejia has impressed this season for the U21 side with a goal and four assists from 12 appearances.
The Colombian Under-20 international was spotted in training yesterday and it remains to be seen whether Ten Hag will be tempted to pick him up for tomorrow’s match.
The 20-year-old, who can play on the right wing or up front, is unlikely to make his senior debut but could be given the opportunity to come on the bench against Forest.
United have beaten Forest in three consecutive clashes this season. However, tomorrow’s challenge could be difficult after the first injuries.
Rashford is unavailable for Steve Cooper’s side, while Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are also ruled out after picking up foot injuries against Sevilla in midweek.
The club are also missing Alejandro Garnacho with an ankle problem, while Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay remain doubtful for the afternoon kick-off at the City Ground.
As such, United face a test challenge on the road, but they should still prevail. The likes of Anthony Martial, Antony and Bruno Fernandes need to step up.
Jadon Sancho also has a point to prove after struggling in midweek. The Englishman regularly lost the ball and looked uncertain in the final third.
