Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov says Jadon Sancho has failed to realize his potential since joining Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund almost two years ago.
After much speculation, the England international joined United in July 2021, seemingly ending the club’s long-term pursuit of a right-winger. So far, however, he has struggled to live up to expectations in United colours. In 68 games, he scored only ten goals and provided five assists.
After struggling for consistency under former bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, many hoped Erik ten Hag would find a way to unlock Sancho’s potential. However, he struggled to deliver the goods in the first half of the season, so on the recommendation of Ten Hag, he traveled to the Netherlands during the World Cup break to continue working on the individual training program.
He was reinstated in the United squad in February and offered a glimpse of his ability despite struggling for any sort of consistency. And Berbatov thinks Sancho needs to improve his performance.
“He has to play like he used to play at Borussia Dortmund,” Berbatov told Betfred. “Having spent five seasons in Germany, I know that some Bundesliga games can be freer, easier and slower.
“Jadon needs to show improvement and in my opinion he has failed to deliver on his promise by moving to that next level in his performance as his career has progressed. He needs to play his best when he gets the chance to play and it is clear who tries, but sometimes circumstances can be difficult and they can be against you.
“However, Jadon is a talent and he has the tools to be successful at Manchester United and to play better than now.
“I can’t wait to see him finish the season strong and help the team with his dribbling and his speed. Of course I want him to stay and see how he starts next season because he has to show everyone the stuff he’s made of.”
