Arsenal are currently 15 points clear of Manchester United in the Premier League, but the Reds can still win three trophies this season.
Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United will have had a better season than Arsenal if the Gunners fail to win the Premier League title this season.
Mikel Arteta’s men are currently four points clear of table-top Manchester City, but the Blues still have a game in hand against the London outfit. Arsenal, who have dropped points from their last two games following draws with Liverpool and West Ham, take on City at the Etihad Stadium next week.
The Gunners will only have a point clear of the holders if Pep Guardiola’s side win their outstanding game, with Arsenal now likely needing a result against the Blues when the sides meet on April 26. Given how long Arteta’s side have been at the top of the table, several pundits have suggested that if they don’t go on to lift the trophy, it will be a failure.
United, meanwhile, have already won the Carabao Cup this season and continue to fight for a top-three spot, as well as Europa League and FA Cup glory. Discussing Arsenal and the Reds’ respective campaigns, former defender Ferdinand claimed Erik ten Hag’s men could end up having the better season.
“If Arsenal don’t win the league and Man United come third and only one trophy, they’ve had a better season,” he told Vibe with Five. “If you’re a player, forget the fans now and you come third and win a trophy, the Carabao Cup, whatever it is, and the team above you comes second and doesn’t win any trophy, who is the happier player?
“The one who finished third.”
However, Ferdinand did insist he ‘hopes Arsenal win the league this season’. The Gunners were knocked out of the FA Cup and Europa League earlier this season but can still manage to clinch their first Premier League crown in nearly 20 years.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag’s men could potentially end the campaign with three cups in what would no doubt be considered a magnificent debut season for the Dutchman.
