WHY RASHFORD IS THE BEST SINCE VAN PERSIE

Marcus Rashford was on target again for Manchester United in north London as we drew 2-2 with Tottenham Hotspur.

Our No.10 scored for the first time since early April, when he held Bruno Fernandes’ laser-accurate diagonal ball before slamming the ball into the net, after Fraser Forster’s desperate jump.

The goal doubled our first-half lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, after Rashford provided an assist for Jadon Sancho in a crucial opening clash in the Champions League race. However, the home side brought us back after the break, with goals from Pedro Porro and Heung-min Son equalising.

Rashford’s goal was his 29th in a terrific season – already his best on an individual level as he beat the 22 he scored in all competitions in 2019/20.

He still has much of the season to play, with United ahead of seven Premier League games and the Emirates FA Cup final against Manchester City to negotiate.

But Rashford has already scored more goals in a single season in all competitions than any other player since Robin van Persie in 2012-13.

The Dutchman, who was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from arch-rivals Arsenal, was an inspiration for United in our last successful season in the Premier League.
Robin scored 26 goals in 38 top-flight games as we clinched our 20th English league title, and also scored three goals in Europe and one in the Emirates FA Cup, taking his tally to 30.

WHY RASHFORD IS THE BEST SINCE VAN PERSIE

That’s the next goal for Rashford – and if he scores two more, he’ll equal Wayne Rooney, the last United player to score more than 30 goals in a season for us.

Wayne did so the year before Robin arrived in 2011/12 and signed up 34 times that year.
