According to reports from Football Insider, Liverpool is in negotiations to extend goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel’s contract past this season.
Adrian’s journey at Liverpool
Adrian joined the team in the 2019–20 season as a backup option and has since made 14 Premier League appearances. Despite getting little playing time, he helped Liverpool win the Premier League in his first season. But his appearances have decreased this year, and his Champions League performance against Atletico Madrid drew criticism.
Will Adrian stay?
Adrian’s situation has changed significantly from what was initially anticipated, as he was set to become a free agent this summer. Liverpool have now started contract talks with the 36-year-old, showing that they want to keep him on staff.
Concerns that Caoimhin Kelleher, their backup goalkeeper, might look for more consistent playing time elsewhere led to the decision. Adrian will be considered by Liverpool if he signs a new contract as they evaluate their goalkeeping options.
Possible departures from Anfield
Adrian’s name was conspicuously missing from the list when Liverpool announced the departures of a number of important players, including Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
This omission raises the possibility of an extension of the Spaniard’s stay at Anfield. Ron-Robert Zieler from Hannover 96 is one of Liverpool’s potential replacements, though talks are still in progress.
Klopp on the situation
In response to the rumors surrounding the goalies, manager Jurgen Klopp stated that he believes both Adrian and Kelleher will stay at the team.
Klopp brushed aside talk of Kelleher leaving and said that a truly exceptional offer would be required to even consider a transfer. Regarding Adrian, Klopp said that if there are no farewell plans, it is likely that the goalkeeper will remain.
Klopp insisted he and Kelleher would stay when asked why there were no plans for Adrian’s farewell.
“You want to say goodbye just in case, but I honestly don’t think Caoimh Kelleher will be leaving—he has a contract.
“I must say, it must be a remarkable offer for me to even consider selling him.
“Adrian, what does it mean if we don’t say goodbye? that he probably stays. It hasn’t been decided yet if there isn’t anything in the papers, to be honest.
“However, we won’t say goodbye just in case. But I have a good feeling that we will continue to collaborate in that capacity.”
Adrian’s future is still unknown, but signs point to the possibility that he might stay at Anfield while other players have left Liverpool. The club is also looking at other goalkeeping options, with Ron-Robert Zieler being mentioned as a possible target.
