Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain turned down the opportunity to join Liverpool last summer, but he may now be available again after choosing not to exercise a one-year contract option.
After the striker chose not to exercise a one-year option in his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, Kylian Mbappe’s long-term future is once again in doubt.
After his contract at Parc des Princes expired, Mbappe, 24, was heavily linked to a transfer last summer. But the Frenchman ultimately made the decision to reject interest from several of Europe’s elite clubs in order to dedicate his future to the Ligue 1 giants.
The sought-after forward signed a three-year contract, but the last year is optional. As a result, Mbappe would be free to leave the club at the end of the 2023–24 season.
L’Equipe reports that Mbappe doesn’t want to stay in the French capital until 2025, so that scenario appears to be coming true.
Mbappe’s reluctance to stay in Paris is likely to put Real Madrid on high alert. The Spanish powerhouses launched a massive charm offensive in an effort to woo the striker to the Bernabeu last summer and were confident they had a deal in the bag before Mbappe decided to extend his contract.
According to The Athletic, Mbappe was being courted by Liverpool, who are also fans of the striker. Antero Henrique, the club consultant, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the president of PSG, were reportedly willing to let Mbappe leave for a staggering £352 million fee, according to a report from back in January, but Mbappe was not sold on the idea.
In a previous interview with The Telegraph, Mbappe revealed he had talks with the club and that Jurgen Klopp had previously acknowledged the club’s interest in signing him.
Last May, Mbappe claimed, “We talked a little bit, but not too much. I spoke with Liverpool because my mother loves the team and it is her favorite. You will need to ask her why; I’m not sure.
“The club is good, and we first met them five years ago. They were there when I was in Monaco. It’s a sizable club. Naturally, the final matchup was between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.”
Although it is unclear whether Liverpool would be interested in a deal for Mbappe again, a summer transfer may still be in the works. The relationship between the striker and Neymar has garnered attention throughout the season, and Mbappe raised eyebrows when he criticized the club for using him so prominently in their marketing for season tickets for 2023–24.
Mbappe wrote on Instagram: “I just attended the club’s renewal campaign viewing for the 23/24 season.
“I was never made aware of the details of the conversation I had with my interlocutor. A simple interview at a club marketing day appeared to be taking place. This video has been posted, but I disagree. I support individual image rights because of this. PSG is a sizable organization with a large family, but it is unquestionably not Kylian Saint-Germain.”
