Liverpool’s James Milner set to equal Premier League appearance record on closing day

James Milner, a midfielder for Liverpool, is set to play against Southampton on Sunday and break a Premier League appearance record.

When his contract expires at the end of June, the Merseyside giants have already declared that the seasoned player will leave Anfield for free.

According to reports, Milner will join Brighton and Hove Albion, a team that will compete in the Europa League from 2023 to 2024.

The 37-year-old was used by Jurgen Klopp in the match against Aston Villa last weekend, appearing for the final 18 minutes of the 1-1 draw despite those alleged developments.

When Liverpool play Southampton in what is essentially a dead-rubber, there is a chance that Klopp will prioritize using players who will be at Anfield next season.

Milner has the opportunity to become just the fifth player in Premier League history to accomplish a specific feat, though.

If Milner is given playing time at St. Mary’s, it will be the 16th time that he has participated in a top-flight match on the season’s final day.

On the final weekend of a Premier League season, only Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Jamie Carragher, and Gareth Barry have played that many times.

Milner has already made 618 appearances for five different clubs, placing third all-time in the division.

Only 14 games separate him from Ryan Giggs, who is in second place, and Gareth Barry, who is in first place.

Liverpool have gone as many as 13 games without conceding more than once in a single match against Southampton entering the South Coast matchup.

In addition, Klopp’s team have triumphed in its last six league final-day contests, while Southampton have lost its last two season-ending contests.
