FA CUP: Erik ten Hag vows Manchester United will ‘give their all’ to prevent City from winning the treble

Manchester United are the only team to have won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in a single season, standing in the way of their rivals in the cup final.

Erik ten Hag has said Manchester United will do everything they can to prevent Manchester City from completing the treble when they meet in the FA Cup final.

United beat Brighton on penalties after a goalless draw at Wembley to progress to the final in June against their rivals.

Solly March missed Roberto De Zerbi’s side’s decisive shot after both teams scored their first six penalties as United recorded their second English final of the season following their Carabao Cup victory in February.

Manchester City who won the Premier League some days ago defeated Champions League holders and fourteen time winners Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-final to set up a final against Serie A giants Inter Milan in June.

City finished the season with 89 points, 14 points ahead of Manchester United who finished third with 75 points.

United are the only English side to have lifted the League, FA Cup and Champions League treble under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999 and Ten Hag said fans will have no doubt his side will throw their all at their arch-rivals, to keep it like that.

“Obviously I understand the feelings of Man United fans on this,” said Ten Hag. “We will do everything we can to give them that, give them the second trophy; everything I have, everything the team has, the staffs have.

“We will give everything for this. We can because we prove it. It’s not easy, it’s a great team, but we also have a great team and great players. We can beat them.

“We’re going to give everything and if I say everything, that’s it, more than 100% is not possible. So that’s what the fans can count on – that we give it and do it against all the opponents.

“But obviously we want to give it against City, we certainly want to give it to the fans.”

United beat City 2-1 at Old Trafford when the sides met in the league in January, but it will be the first time the FA Cup final will feature a Manchester derby.

United booked a Champions League spot after beating Chelsea 4-1 on thursday evening. City will be seeking to lift their second silverware of the season when the two sides meet at Wembley on June 3.

“We are proof, proof that we can beat them, but then we have to play the perfect match,” he said. “I think this was the perfect match we’ve played this season, but we have to start over.

“We know that, but first we have to focus on different opportunities, different games. It’s not for me, it’s not about that. I want to win every game, no matter who the opponent is.

“Brighton, I have to give them a lot of credit, they’re a great team, great philosophy of football and that made it a great game for the neutral fan. I think it was a great game for all the fans of the stadium.”

Brighton manager De Zerbi felt his side deserved the win over United and a first FA Cup final appearance since 1983.

Brighton finished sixth thereby qualifying to play in the Europa League next season.

“I think we deserved to win because we played better and had more chances to score,” said De Zerbi.

“We struggled midway through the second half, but for the rest of the game we kept the game under control.

“They (the players) are only focused on our target in the Premier League. We are playing well, we deserve to achieve our goal of Europe, but football can be cruel.”
