David de Gea set to be replaced as Manchester United top goalkeeper

David de Gea could lose his place as Manchester United’s No.1 as Diogo Costa and David Raya linked.

He could be replaced as Manchester United No.1 this summer, despite expecting to sign a new contract at the club.

There have been a lot of speculations about De Gea’s future at Old Trafford this season, with the goalkeeper only having one year left on his current contract.

Numerous mistakes during the campaign haven’t helped with the feeling from many that United would be better off signing a replacement this summer.

Roy Keane was not impressed that the former Atletico Madrid keeper won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award for keeping the most clean sheets.

Mistakes persisted last Saturday for Ilkay Gundogan’s second goal of the game as Manchester City beat United in the FA Cup final.

And despite the fact that the club have been in talks over extending the 32-year-old’s contract the club continue to be linked with other options.

According to the Daily Mail it looks like the idea is to keep the Spanish goalkeeper in the squad for next season but he is likely to be the second choice.

Amongst the options for the club are either Brentford shot stopper David Raya or Porto keeper Diogo Costa, with the former likely to be cheaper.

There is interest in De Gea with the Spaniard said to have turned down an offer from a club from Saudi Arabia, as they attempt to take over football.

Raya has a year left to run on his contact in west London and has reportedly turned down two offers from Thomas Franck to remain with the club.

He has been linked to be a replacement for Hugo Lloris at Tottenham Hotspur and despite being able to walk away for nothing in a year’s time Brentford are believed to want up to £40m.

Porto goalkeeper Costa has been linked with United for some months with the 23-year-old impressing in his first two years as first choice.

He could cost as much as £65m and Ten Hag’s team are again said to have competition from a Premier league rival, with Newcastle United supposedly interested.

The Red Devils’ summer planning has been put into question by how long it will take the Glazers to sell the club, with no preferred bidder named yet.

Sheikh Jassim has put in a fifth and final offer for full control of the team and has given the current owners until Friday to respond.

Clubs from Saudi Arabia have shown interest in signing Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea amid concerns over his future, according to reports.

De Gea has been a mainstay in Erik ten Hag’s side this season, picking up the Premier League Golden Glove award for the 2022/23 campaign.

The Spaniard joined the Red Devils in 2011 from Atletico Madrid and has since established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the top-flight.

However, there has been plenty of speculation over his future at Old Trafford, with Ten Hag keen to provide competition for De Gea.

Nevertheless, the United boss is eager to tie him down to a new deal at the club, with talks said to be at an ‘advanced stage’, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

“They [Manchester United] wanted to reduce his salary but, at the same time, to have a different structure with the contract – maybe a longer contract with a different structure of the salary – so this is the discussion, but it’s now very, very advanced,” Romano told Give Me Sport.

“De Gea wants to stay and Manchester United want to keep De Gea, so the idea is to continue together.

“I think Erik ten Hag has been very, very clear on that. It’s about the final clauses and then it will be completed soon.”

However, Saudi clubs are reportedly keeping tabs on the 32-year-old over a possible swoop.

According to 90min, interest from Saudi Arabia’s Pro League has materialised and ‘threatens to complicate the situation’.

Although the report adds that De Gea does not want to leave United for the Middle East at this point in his career.

Roberto Firmino and N’Golo Kante are among the superstar players tipped for a move to Saudi Arabia, while Real Madrid legend Karim Benzema has already agreed to join Al-Ittihad.

Cristiano Ronaldo has raved about the league recently, claiming it could become the fifth best division in world football.

“If they continue to do the work that they want to for the next five years, I think the Saudi League can be the 5th best league in the world,” he said in a glowing review.
