CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Have Liverpool qualified for next season’s competition after Man City beat Inter Milan?

Manchester City have made history by defeating Inter Milan to win the Champions League, but will Liverpool participate in the competition next season as a result?

Manchester City made history on Saturday night as they beat Inter Milan 1-0 to finally get their hands on the Champions League trophy.

Midfielder Rodri was the hero as he notched the second-half winner, after Kevin De Bruyne was forced to come off as a result of an injury earlier in the game.

The victory capped off an historic season for Pep Guardiola’s side, who have now claimed the coveted Treble having also won the Premier League and FA Cup.

In winning the Premier League, City of course secured qualification to next season’s Champions League. But having now won the competition in Istanbul, City will head into the 2023-24 campaign in the place reserved for the holders.

So, with the Premier League already receiving four Champions League spots, will the side who finished fifth – Liverpool – now qualify for next year’s tournament? Read on to find out.

Do Liverpool now qualify for the Champions League?
As stated, City’s place in the competition next season was decided before their victory over Inter Milan.

But Liverpool, having seen off competition from Brighton to finish fifth, will not get a place in next season’s Champions League.

Instead, the spot is transfered to the winner of the highest-ranked national league in the UEFA coefficient without an automatic group-stage qualifying spot.

Traditionally, this would be the country ranked 11th that would be placed directly in the group stage rather than having to qualify.

Currently, Serbia occupies 11th position in the table. However, the champions of the Serbian top division are already guaranteed a place. This is because Russia is ranked 10th. The nation’s clubs have been banned from European competitions following the invasion of Ukraine.

Therefore, the champions of the 12th-ranked country will now get a bye, which is Ukraine.

Can five teams from the Premier League play in the Champions League?
There are rules which allow five teams from England to play in the same Champions League season.

The only way this could happen is if an English club won the Champions League or Europa League this season but failed to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

With City winning the league this season, these rules were never going to come into play ahead of next season’s competition.
