49ers Hire Former Seahawks Coach

The Seattle Seahawks will have to watch a lot more of former assistant coach Nick Sorensen next season.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the division-rival San Francisco 49ers have appointed Sorensen as their new defensive coordinator.

Sorensen, 45, has worked his way up quickly with the 49ers, as he started as a defensive assistant in 2022, became a defensive pass game specialist last season and is now the defensive coordinator.

Sorensen is also the 49ers third defensive coordinator in three years. He is replacing Steve Wilks, whom the 49ers sacked after their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

Before Wilks was DeMeco Ryans, who is now the head coach of the Houston Texans.

After a 10-year career as primarily a backup and special teams player, Sorensen began the next chapter of his NFL journey as the Seahawks’ assistant special teams coach in 2013.

He held multiple titles over his eight-year run in Seattle, but most-notably served as the team’s defensive backs coach from 2017-2020. Sorensen also spent one year with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021, serving as Urban Meyer’s special teams coordinator.
