Xabi Alonso is probably the most in-demand manager in world football right now. A lot of concerns were raised when Bayer Leverkusen appointed the Spaniard last season, a then rookie as a top level head coach, to help them out of a potential relegation battle. It would be safe to say that the Real Madrid and Liverpool legend has done that, and a lot more.
Bayer Leverkusen improved immediately following the appointment of Alonso and ended up having a decent season. Even then, nobody could have seen this campaign coming.
Bayer Leverkusen currently sit atop the Bundesliga table, ten points ahead of Bayern Munich. It would take a mighty collapse from them to not win the title from here.
Not just that, Alonso’s side have not lost a single game in all competitions this season so far. That is remarkable and they have the chance to create history. As for the Spaniard himself, European giants are set to come calling.
As reported by The Guardian, Liverpool had hoped to make Alonso Jurgen Klopp’s successor. But the Spaniard is set to remain at Bayer Leverkusen for another season at least.
Of course, this is a blow for another one of Alonso’s former teams, Bayern Munich. They are looking for a new manager as well, with Thomas Tuchel set to step down at the end of what has been a disappointing campaign for the Bavarian giants.
Considering the circumstances, one has to wonder whether Alonso has his eyes on the Real Madrid job. It is not available right now, with Carlo Ancelotti signing an extension not too long ago.
But that could change in the future. Otherwise, the Spaniard had pretty much a free run at clubs like Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
