Legendary Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has said that Liverpool need to win a second Premier League title to cap off the era of Jurgen Klopp.
The manager announced earlier this season that he would leave the club in the summer. It brings to an end a nine-year stay at Anfield, where the club have lifted the Premier League title for the first time.
Liverpool are looking to cap off the Klopp era in the perfect way by lifting the title for the second time. But they are locked in a three-way battle with both Man City and Arsenal.
Speaking ahead of the 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, Keane claimed that the Anfield club need to get another title under their belt.
“They won the title and it was difficult when they won it in terms of Covid and not enjoying it with supporters, so probably for the player’s point of view if they want to go down that road and be compared as one of the great teams you do have to back it up with another title,” he said on Sky Sports ahead of the game.
“One wouldn’t be enough for me, I know that. They’re not shying away from that and that is what great players do. They embrace that challenge. I think they need another title under their belt.”
Although former Liverpool man Jamie Redknapp is not in total agreement with his fellow pundit.
“I don’t think it changes the legacy of Jurgen Klopp or this Liverpool team [if they fail to win the league], they’ll still go down in history as one of the great teams,” he said.
“[They won the] Champions League and the style of football that has been embedded at the club has been absolutely phenomenal. That is the manager.
“They had not won a title for 30 years, he’s come and given everyone belief again. He’s a phenomenon, one of the greats. How on earth you replace a guy like that, because he’s more than a football manager, he’s encapsulated everything that city is and he’s been so, so good.”
