Radio star says his footy team won because one of their biggest stars ‘had my face all over his groin’

A Queensland radio host has claimed the secret behind the Brisbane Broncos’ latest win is the fact star forward Pat Carrigan was wearing some lucky undies with his face on them during the match.

Nova radio host David ‘Luttsy’ Lutteral gifted Carrigan a pair of distinctive red budgie smugglers during a broadcast earlier this month, and he believes they were the key to Brisbane’s win over Parramatta on Friday.

Carrigan wore the undies in his side’s loss to the Roosters on May 3, but decided to give them another go against the Eels.

‘I really respect that he wore them for the second game after the first-game loss. Coach Walters instilled in the team that I bring good luck to the team and Patty just put them in a double wash cycle and went for round two,’ Lutteral said.

The popular radio host said the idea to make the undies was all Carrigan’s.

‘I’m not even kidding, it was Pat’s idea. We were having a milkshake one day on James St and he said ‘why don’t I get some budgie smugglers with your face on it’?’ he said.

‘I mean, how could I resist that!’

Lutteral added that Carrigan’s Broncos teammates want their own pair of lucky undies, but he won’t be a part of it.

‘Of course other players like Kotoni [Staggs] want to wear them now but I couldn’t do it to Patty. I’m a one-man budgie smuggler and I know Patty is too,’ he explained.

He hopes to see Carrigan wearing his special undies when he plays for Queensland in this year’s State of Origin series.

‘I guess the ultimate goal would be to see Patty celebrating an Origin win with my face all over his groin,’ he said.

‘It’s the stuff of dreams I know, but we wouldn’t have gotten this far if we weren’t two Brisbane kids with stars in our eyes.’

The Broncos will next take on Manly at Suncorp Stadium on Friday for Magic Round.

Coach Kevin Walters is doubtful that hooker Billy Walters will play after injuring his wrist against the Eels on Friday.

‘Billy’s got a ligament problem in his wrist and he got a bang on it early in the game so he could barely pass,’ Walters said post-match.

‘I’d say he’d be in doubt for next week.’

Meanwhile, Manly have lost star player Tom Trbojevic with a hamstring injury.
