Xherdan Shaqiri Sets New International Record With Goal Against Scotland

Ex-Liverpool star Xherdan Shaqiri scored a sensational goal for Switzerland in their Euro 2024 game against Scotland, setting a remarkable record in the process.

The midfielder, who won the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool, returned to the Switzerland side for a crucial Group B encounter against Scotland in Cologne.

Switzerland had begun their campaign strongly with a 3-1 victory over Hungary, while Scotland aimed for redemption following a heavy 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany.

Scotland took an early lead through Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, whose shot deflected off Fabian Schar after a penetrating run from captain Andrew Robertson.

However, their advantage was short-lived as a defensive error gifted Shaqiri possession on the edge of the box.

Without taking a touch, Shaqiri unleashed a swirling shot into the top corner of the net.

Despite missing several late chances, Switzerland could not prevent Scotland from earning a point and moving to third place in Group A.

With a victory against Hungary on Sunday, Switzerland are poised to advance beyond the group stage for the first time in their history.

Xherdan Shaqiri’s goal highlights his unique achievement as the only player to score in each of the last three European Championships and World Cups.

The 32-year-old previously played for Bayern Munich where he won three Bundesliga titles in three seasons before moving to Inter Milan.

He made his mark in the Premier League with Stoke City, where he became a fan favourite for his goal-scoring prowess.

Following Stoke City’s relegation in 2018, Shaqiri made a surprising transfer to Liverpool, where he enjoyed immediate success under Jurgen Klopp.

In his debut season, he played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph, notably in the dramatic 4-3 comeback against Barcelona in the semi-finals.

During his tenure at Anfield, he also secured the Super Cup, Club World Cup, and Premier League titles before moving on to Lyon and subsequently joining Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire.

Shaqiri’s international career has been equally illustrious, amassing over 120 caps and scoring 32 goals for Switzerland.

He ranks as the country’s second-most capped player and fourth-highest goal-scorer, having represented Switzerland at four World Cups and three European Championships.
