Adam Reynolds has admitted he was initially pleased to see the Rabbitohs struggling after his departure from the club at the end of 2021.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Ebbs and Flows podcast hosted by former NRL half, Isaac John, Reynolds revealed he enjoyed watching the Rabbitohs struggle after he left.
“Early on, I was happy, not gonna lie (to see Souths struggle),” the veteran halfback said.
However, given his strong ties to some of the players still plying their trade with the Rabbitohs, Reynolds revealed he feels a little more sympathetic to the plight of his former club.
“I’ve got a lot of mates in that side, and obviously I’ve struggled in seasons as well, and you know the pain that it brings and you don’t want to see your mates go through that,” he said.
“I still talk to a lot of them regularly and when they were struggling this year I had a soft spot for them and wanted to see them do well.
“They’re coming good, but I feel for a lot of them.”
Reynolds departed the Rabbitohs at the end of 2021, signing with the Broncos on an initial three-year deal that was extended for a further year at the beginning of this season.
The halfback wanted to stay but the Rabbitohs were only willing to off him a one-year contract extension.
Since his departure South Sydney’s form has dipped, including their spectacular drop off in 2023 that saw the club drop from first after 12 rounds to ninth at the end of the season.
The club began 2024 in even worse condition, sitting bottom of the ladder after 12 rounds, by which time Jason Demetriou was sacked as head coach and replaced by Ben Hornby until the end of the season.
On the contrary, Brisbane have been a much-improved side under the 34-year-old’s stewardship, notably during the 2023 season when the club made the grand final, which they ultimately lost to the Panthers.
“It worked out well for me,” Reynolds said of his South Sydney exit, before admitting Brisbane’s 2023 grand final loss hurt more than his one with the Rabbitohs two years earlier.
