The fans of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant now have the extraordinary chance to acquire a piece of NBA history as the player’s Staples Center locker goes up for auction.
This rare memorabilia, saved from destruction during renovations at the arena in 2018, is estimated to fetch between $1 million and $1.5 million.
The story of the locker’s preservation is as remarkable as the item itself.
A maintenance worker at the Staples Center recognized the significance of the locker during the renovations and decided to save it.
The locker, which was initially set to be discarded, was kept in storage for several years.
Eventually, an American collector, who already possessed Bryant’s locker nameplate, purchased it and reunited the two pieces.
The locker, used by Bryant throughout most of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, was later acquired by a collection through a private deal.
Now, this iconic piece of Bryant’s career is available for auction at Sotheby’s.
The locker, which served as Bryant’s personal space from 2003 until his final game in April 2016, will be on display at Sotheby’s New York gallery from July 26 to July 30.
Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Modern Collectables, emphasized the significance of the item:
“Kobe Bryant’s locker at the Staples Center is more than just a piece of memorabilia; it’s a sacred relic of his unparalleled journey. This locker was Kobe’s sanctuary amidst triumphs and challenges, a witness to the highs and lows of a storied career. Every achievement and hardship left its mark within these walls. Its appearance now at auction symbolizes a rare opportunity to own a unique piece of Kobe’s legacy.”
In alignment with Bryant’s legacy of philanthropy, a portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit The Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation.
Bryant retired from the NBA in 2016 after 20 seasons with the Lakers, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
He finished his career third on the NBA’s all-time scoring list and secured five NBA titles.
Tragically, Bryant passed away on January 26, 2020, in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California, along with his daughter Gianna and seven others.
The auction features other notable items, including Michael Jordan’s worn shorts from his final game with the Washington Wizards in the 2002-03 season, expected to attract significant attention.
His Airness made his last NBA appearance on April 16, 2003, against the Philadelphia 76ers, scoring 15 points in that game.
Additionally, the auction will include Diego Maradona’s game-worn and signed Argentina shirt from the 1985 World Cup, anticipated to sell for over $800,000, and Florence Griffith Joyner’s gold medal from the 1988 Seoul Olympics, along with the spikes she wore during her world record-setting 21.34-second run.
Online bidding for these items, including Kobe Bryant’s locker, goes live on Monday and concludes on August 2.
