49ers Sign Veteran WR Amid Brandon Aiyuk Trade Speculation

The San Francisco 49ers have completed the acquisition of veteran wide receiver Robbie Chosen to a one-year deal amid the Brandon Aiyuk trade speculation, ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced.

Chosen will come into the 49ers wide receiver room after the team waived wide receiver Frank Darby. The 31-year-old will join the fifth team of his career and his fourth team in the last three seasons. Darby originally signed with the team on July 27.

Chosen, the former Temple Owl, came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the New York Jets, where he collected 207 receptions for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns. He averaged 14.8 yards per reception and caught 54.2 percent of his targets.

Chosen, the eight-year NFL veteran, has spent his career with the Jets, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, and Miami Dolphins. He has appeared in 120 games (86 starts) and registered 379 receptions for 5,082 yards (13.4 average) and 30 touchdowns through the air, with 16 carries for 98 yards (6.1 average) on the ground.

His best season came in 2020 with the Panthers, when he caught 95 passes for 1,096 yards.

In Chosen’s last two seasons with the Panthers, Cardinals, and Dolphins, he had a combined 24 catches for 408 yards in 25 games. In his lone season with the Dolphins in 2023, he recorded four receptions on six targets for 126 yards across nine games.

Chosen will now aim to play a vital role in the 49ers offense, especially with the possible departure of their All-Pro wide receiver. Aiyuk is coming off his best season, where he earned Second-team All-Pro honors while collecting a career-high in receiving yards (1,342) and seven touchdowns in 16 games.

Aiyuk wants to get paid before he enters his fifth NFL season. He wants to be paid like some of his peers who have received contract extensions this offseason, around the neighborhood of $30 million annually. That is a steep price to pay, which is why the 49ers are hesitant to give him the money, whether he deserves it or not.

With this signing of Chosen, all signs may point to Aiyuk no longer donning the red and gold once Week 1 rolls around. The possibility of Aiyuk not being around will change the dynamic of the offense, and it will be a lot to ask of Chosen to come in and expect anything close to what Aiyuk can offer.
