The San Francisco 49ers-Brandon Aiyuk saga, which has been ongoing for months, may be coming to an end.
The 49ers have a potential deal in place to trade the wide receiver to the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. The report says the Steelers are “in a good place” regarding Aiyuk agreeing to a long-term to remain with the Steelers beyond the 2024 season.
The only thing holding up the deal is the 49ers’ final approval. Terms of a potential trade are not yet known.
The 49ers have sent Aiyuk a long-term contract offer, but Aiyuk has not accepted the offer. The team could waiting on Aiyuk’s response before making a decision on the trade.
Aiyuk, 26, posted a career-year in 2023, with 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, helping the 49ers reach Super Bowl 58. He is set to earn $14.1 million in base salary in 2024,his fifth-year option.
He wants a contract extension that will give him an average annual salary on par with other wide receivers – Philadelphia’s A.J. Brown, Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson, among others – who signed lucrative new deals during the offseason.
Aiyuk, 26, has been staging a “hold-in” with the 49ers throughout training camp as he seeks a new contract. He’s present at training camp to avoid fines, but he’s not participating in any activities or drills.
