Stephen Curry is still important, and he will be for at least a couple more seasons, but the Golden State Warriors haven’t done enough to increase the team’s competitiveness.
Heading into the offseason, the front office had identified the need to pair Curry with another key scorer, such as Paul George or Lauri Markkanen. However, the negotiations fell through as they opted not to trade first-round picks and part of their young core.
The reasons behind the failed trades outweigh the potential for great results. By operating from this perspective, the Warriors’ front office failed to address the roster’s weaknesses, in addition to motivating Klay Thompson to leave the franchise.
The current supporting cast for Steph Curry – Green, Hield, Kuminga, Podziemski, and Melton – cannot be considered a finished product if the Warriors recognize a Title run as their ambition for the coming seasons.
Golden State has yet to receive any signals from Steph Curry, but his perspective on the future will become clearer by October 21, when he must decide whether to commit to GSW for 2026/27 with a $62 million deal.
Despite the figures, GSW cannot take Curry’s continued presence beyond the contract expiration for granted. Steph’s doubts about the team’s growth and the front office’s decisions will be legitimate if he hasn’t communicated his decision by the deadline. The pressure is all on the Golden State Warriors.
