For Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers,
the 2024 season has been a difficult one characterized by inconsistent performances and a string of injuries that have taken a toll on the team’s playoff ambitions.
The latest setback involves top wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who is now out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, further depleting the 49ers’ offense.
Meanwhile, Deebo Samuel added to the team’s concerns when he was recently hospitalized with what was initially suspected to be pneumonia.
On Wednesday, Shanahan addressed the situation, confirming that Samuel was indeed taken to the hospital but has since been released and could potentially be back on the field for this Sunday’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
“Pneumonia. He’s out of the hospital. He got in here yesterday, doing better than you’d expect with that stuff, and we’ll see how he goes throughout the week,” he noted.
Samuel’s return would be a significant boost for the 49ers, who are desperate to stabilize their offense amidst numerous injuries.
In addition to Samuel, several other key players missed Wednesday’s practice, reflecting the 49ers’ ongoing struggles with player availability.
The list of absentees included wide receiver Jauan Jennings (hip), tight end George Kittle (foot), and offensive tackle Trent Williams, who was given a rest day.
Defensive tackle Kevin Givens (groin), safety George Odum (knee), and kicker Jake Moody (ankle) were also sidelined.
The team continues to monitor their progress, hoping to have as many healthy players as possible for the crucial game against Dallas.
McCaffrey’s return
Adding to the uncertainty, star running back Christian McCaffrey has yet to make an appearance this season due to an Achilles injury.
While there have been whispers of a possible return, Shanahan was clear that McCaffrey won’t be activated just yet, leaving fans to wonder when they might see him back on the field.
“It’s not this week, so hopefully, it will be next week, he said.
