Dak Prescott is set to undergo season-ending surgery on his hamstring, pending the opinion of a final specialist, as they prepare for the second half of the season.
“Prescott is flying to New York to meet with the specialist, but Cowboys doctors already believe he needs the surgery that would sideline him four months,” Schefter wrote.
Dallas is expected to feature quarterback Cooper Rush for the Philadelphia Eagles as, by their own admission, the Cowboys are three and five and 2.5 games behind the Green Bay Packers for the final wild-card slot in the NFC, and Prescott is entering his ninth season with the team.
The Cowboys will start Trey Lance at quarterback versus the Eagles in their next game, and Rush is the team’s backup. The team is considering signing another quarterback to the active roster or placing another on the practice squad.
Dallas does not believe it needs to change its offense to make room for Rush, as the team averaged just 25 points per game all season with Rush playing center. Packages should be expected to be utilized with Lance this season since both Rush and Lance are in their final year of contract, respectively. Prescott becomes the second consecutive Cowboys quarterback to finish the season on injured reserve.
With a completion percentage of 65.4 per cent, Prescott ranks sixth all-time in completion percentage with at least 1,500 pass attempts, and he stands ninth in the NFL’s all-time regular season career passer rating. An intended backup entering his rookie season, Prescott replaced the injured Tony Romo as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback.
He further led the Cowboys toward the top of the NFC and set up multiple rookie quarterback records for himself, earning him the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Since the win, Prescott has led the Cowboys to three more division titles and was a Pro Bowl tripper three times. He took home the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2022.
