For the second consecutive season, an Orioles player has been selected a finalist for the American League Rookie of the Year Award.
Outfielder Colton Cowser was named one of three candidates for the honor on Monday, and he might become the second rookie to win it in the last two seasons, following last year’s winner, Gunnar Henderson. Henderson came short of the American League MVP award this season and was not designated a finalist.
Cowser led all AL rookies in home runs (24) and finished as a Gold Glove finalist for his stellar defense. He was the top rookie in the AL in terms of Wins Above Replacement (WAR) with a 4.0 rating. He will have to beat out a pair of teammates from the New York Yankees in pitcher Luis Gil and catcher Austin Wells.
If Cowser wins. it will be the first time since 2017 (Los Angeles Dodgers) that a team would have consecutive Rookie of the Year Award winners. The Orioles would be the first AL team to complete the feat since the Oakland Athletics in 2004-05. The Dodgers franchise owns the record with five straight seasons winning the Rookie of the Year from 1992-96.
The Orioles would be rewarded a first-round pick if Cowser wins as part of the Prospect Promotion Incentive program that incentivizes teams to call up their top prospects early in the season. They received the No. 32 pick in the first round of the 2023 draft and selected shortstop Griff O’Ferrall out of the University of Virginia.
