“Virgil van Dijk is my favourite defender right now” – Steven Gerrard

Former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has said that the Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk is one of his favourite defender in the world right now.

Speaking on the PFA’s YouTube Channel, Gerrard spoke about some of the Premier League greats as he was picking his dream five-a-side team. The Former Reds captain was confused between two legends for his backline – John Terry and Virgil van Dijk.

Having shared the pitch with Terry in England colours, Gerrard choose his former teammate. However, 43-year-old lauder Virgil van Dijk for his exploits in recent years. He claimed that the Dutch International has entirely transformed Liverpool in last few years.

Gerrard spoke about Virgil and said:
“I would have to pick John Terry. But obviously, biasedly I would love to pick Big Virgil because I think he has transformed Liverpool completely. He’s my favourite defender in the world right now, but from personal experience I played with John for England for over 10 years and he’d get into anyone’s XI.

“I’m sorry Virg, but I still love you.”

Ironically, we didn’t see the best of Virgil van Dijk last season. The 32-year-old came under criticism for a number of poor performances by his fellow country men Marco Van Basten and Ruud Gulit, back in March.

However, after Jordan Henderson’s departure last month, Van Dijk was named as Liverpool’s new captain. The Dutch man will also be eager to take charge of his new role on the Merseyside this season.

Most importantly, Big Virg still remains Stevie G’s favourite defender and we all must agree to that.
