Joel Matip has described how Liverpool’s recent system improvement have adapted to his central defender role

Trent Alexander-Arnold began playing a mixed role at the end of last season, moving from right wing to central midfield when the Reds found the ball. This in turn changes the role of Liverpool’s right centre-back, a position that Matip usually fills when selected.

“Obviously now I have a different situation and I have to adapt. I think this season will get better and better,” said number 32 in the club’s official match day program.

“Obviously I have to think about different things on the pitch because right-back are not first. We have to adapt but at the same time we have added some players in midfield and some new players.

“There are always pros and cons, but there are no perfect systems. That’s how we live in the system we play in, and I have a lot of confidence in our system. ”

This is Matip’s eighth season as a Liverpool player and he is determined to deliver when given the chance.

He continued: “Everything seems to be happening so fast now, but I’ve been here a long time and I’m enjoying it. “When I first arrived, I didn’t really think about how long I was going to stay. I just thought about the time I spent here and focused all my attention on playing football. “I’ve had good moments here and some bad moments with injuries, but I always try to come back and bring out the best in me. That’s what I want to do this season.”
