Liverpool new signing Trey Nyoni scored his first competitive goal for the under-18s as they secured an entertaining victory at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
Nyoni, who arrived from Leicester City last month, scored the opener to send the young Reds on their way to a 4-2 triumph at Brockhall Village in the U18 Premier League North.
Liverpool had gone 3-0 ahead through Wellity Lucky and Jayden Danns – who has scored in all five games this season – but needed an injury-time strike from Trent Kone-Doherty to seal the win after Blackburn scored a quickfire brace in the closing quarter.
The victory means Marc Bridge-Wilkinson’s side have won three of their opening four league games and stand second in the embryonic table.
Nyoni netted a hat-trick in the 10-0 friendly win over Southend United last week, and scored after only five minutes against Blackburn when volleying home a cross from Kone-Doherty.
Lucky doubled the lead on 33 minutes when heading home a Ben Trueman free-kick before Danns scored a fine individual effort shortly after the hour as he beat two defenders and cut inside to fire home a low shot.
Blackburn, though, roused themselves and scored twice inside two minutes, the first a Matthew Litherland header on 76 minutes with Zack Stritch slotting home shortly afterwards.
But the Reds held on and, in the fifth minute of injury-time, Afolami Onanuga released Kone-Doherty to seal the win.
Liverpool are next in U18 Premier League action on Saturday when they host Everton in the mini-derby.
