Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai seemed to be unimpressed with Jude Bellingham’s double against Barcelona today.
Bellingham continued his unbelievable start to the season, scoring twice in El Clasico, to hand Real Madrid a 2-1 victory.
That made it 13 goals in his first 13 games for the Spanish giants. And he celebrated his terrific afternoon by posting some snaps on Instagram alongside the caption ‘This is Real Madrid.’
Virgil van Dijk was quick to give his approval, posting a flame emoji. But it was Szoboszlai’s response that will have Liverpool fans chuckling. ‘hmmm,’ wrote the 23-year-old, with a beautifully placed ‘shrug’ emoji.
We’re not altogether sure what this means from Szoboszlai. It feels unlikely that he’d openly suggest that Bellingham’s El Clasico double is simply worth shrugging off.
It’s possible that the Hungarian is instead implying that the Madrid midfielder made light work of such a huge fixture. He may also be being a little tongue-in-cheek.
But given Liverpool’s high profile failed pursuit of Bellingham in the summer, we know which way Reds fans will take this.
Having failed to sign Bellingham, Szoboszlai is now the face of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield rebuild. Fans will perhaps see this as their No.8 playing down the influence of a former target. That’s bound to play well.
Nevertheless, it’s impossible to ignore that Bellingham is quite possibly the best player on the planet right now. Everything he touches changes to gold at the moment.
There will be some fans still holding out hope that the 20-year-old will one day wear Liverpool red. But if he carries on this kind of form, that’s going to be difficult.
In the meantime, we’re more than happy with Szoboszlai. The Hungary captain may not be scoring at anything like the rate Bellingham is, but his impact has been similarly huge.
Perhaps we’ll see this little comment cleared up at some point. But until then, we’ll enjoy some shade being thrown towards a player who doesn’t know what he’s missing.
