Gary Neville was wrong about Liverpool once again and Jamie Carragher just proved it

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has highlighted yet another of Gary Neville’s bad positions about the Reds, digging out an old tweet to neatly illustrate the point.

After Manchester United’s recent Champions League failure, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher couldn’t resist the opportunity to rib Gary Neville.

United’s loss to Bayern by one goal resulted in them finishing last in their group, which also included FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, compounding manager Erik ten Hag’s problems.

The string of defeats has been relentless for United this season, with 12 losses in 24 matches. It lags behind Liverpool by a substantial 10 points in the Premier League, a gap that could widen after Sunday’s clash at Anfield.

Carragher reveled in the latest downturn of Liverpool’s arch-rival and opted to bring back an old X (formerly Twitter) post by Neville from May, where he predicted a challenging season for Jürgen Klopp’s team.

Neville had stated: “Klopp needs to rebuild an ageing squad but no CL is a lot of money lost and they don’t just need 1 or 2!” This forecast has evidently backfired on the Sky Sports commentator, who misjudged Liverpool’s midfield ahead of this season.

Neville had expressed skepticism about Liverpool’s acquisitions of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. He audaciously suggested that Klopp would prefer to swap his midfield for Erik ten Hag’s options.

“When you look at the actual players, let’s take United as an example: Fernandes, Mount, Casemiro, Eriksen. I think Klopp would swap his midfield now for United’s,” Neville had asserted.

That’s been proven completely wrong in a matter of months. Meanwhile, Manchester United will now find itself without the riches of the Champions League, or indeed any European competition, as it weighs up what it can and cannot do to fix the plethora of problems in January.

However, none of these missteps can rival Neville’s bold proclamation made during the summer of 2019. The retired defender had confidently declared:

“I can guarantee you as clear as day, Manchester United will win again. They’ll probably win the league before Liverpool, in my opinion. And that’s not being disrespectful, they’ll probably win the league before Liverpool.”
