Payne Haas’ father arrested as he faces the death penalty in Indonesia over alleged drug plot

The father of Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas has been arrested for alleged drug trafficking.

Gregor Johann Haas, 46, was arrested by police in Cebu City, in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines, on Wednesday.

Authorities are now trying to extradite him to Indonesia where he could face life of imprisonment or the firing squad under the country’s strict drug laws.

Now footage has emerged of Haas’ dramatic arrest where at least three police officers swarmed a car, demanding he ‘get down’.

In the video, obtained by 7News, Haas was pinned on the floor where he had his hands cuffed behind his back.

He was taken to the capital, Manila, and remains under guard at an immigration facility as authorities try to extradite him to Jakarta to face charges.

National Narcotics Agency spokesman Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said they have been trying to track Haas down ever since 5kg of methamphetamine was allegedly found at an undisclosed location in December.

‘We have good cooperation with Australian police, so we will work with them too,’ he added.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman told AAP it was providing consular assistance to an Australian man arrested in the Philippines.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said he opposed the death penalty and said he would be speaking to the Prime Minister and the Attorney General about the case.

It has not been suggested that anyone else in the Haas family is involved.

Payne’s mother, Joan Taufua, is in jail on remand facing manslaughter charges after a car she was driving killed three people in 2022.

Payne has been caring for his two younger brothers since then. The Broncos have rallied around Payne following the latest family incident. Brisbane coach Kevin Walters says the club are supporting Haas ‘in every way’.

Police said they have been trying to track Haas Snr down ever since 5kg of methamphetamine was allegedly found at an undisclosed location in December.

‘Payne’s a very strong individual and his family is as well. A lot of people probably don’t understand or realise the person Payne is,’ Walters said.

‘He’s a tremendous guy, tremendous family person and in this moment in time that he’s going through we will get around him in every way we can to support him and his family. That’s all we can do.

‘Payne’s just such a great person of integrity … and what he’s doing with his family even before this incident is something we need to be very respectful of.’

Payne left the field in the 60th minute on Friday night during the Bronco’s one-point win over Manly with a lower leg injury before returning to the field 14 minutes later to finish the match.
