Barcelona chief has already made transfer priority clear amid interest in Liverpool ace Luis Diaz

The president of Barcelona Joan Laporta has already admitted that the club is on the hunt for a winger amid ongoing interest in Liverpool forward Luis Diaz. The Colombian was someone the Camp Nou side admired when he made the switch from FC Porto to Anfield in January 2022.

Two and a half years later, Diaz is being linked with a switch to Spain again after his father fueled talk of a move earlier in the year. Diaz Snr admitted that it was a dream of his to see his son play in La Liga, though the Liverpool number seven insisted he was happy at Anfield at the back end of the season.

While there is no guarantee that Barcelona would be able to put an appealing transfer fee on the table for Liverpool to consider this summer, at 27 and with doubts over his ability to find the back of the net regularly, some believe that cashing in could make sense.

“We will study what [else] is needed with Hansi Flick,” Laporta said at the start of this month, via ESPN, after confirming his plan to sign Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix on loan again from Manchester City and Atletico Madrid respectively.

“Maybe we need to strengthen in defensive midfield. [Andreas] Christensen has helped us there, but we have to add another player. We also think there are players in the B team, like [midfielder] Marc Casado, who has had an extraordinary season. But we don’t talk about players, just about positions.

“Just as we don’t need a big transfer out, we don’t believe we need big signings. Maybe a midfielder, a winger, but we also have an academy which can help fill these positions. We can compete in Europe with a squad based on the academy. That’s what Flick has conveyed to us and what we think. We have a squad that can compete in Spain and Europe with the chance of success.”
