The annual LFC Foundation match has continued to take shape as we get closer and closer to March 23. The management staff and lineup are continuing to fill out.
On that front, perhaps the biggest player to confirm their return to Anfield is none other than the electrifying Fernando Torres. The 39-year old Spaniard will be the 8th addition to the Liverpool Legends lineup that will face Ajax Legends.
He is one of the most exciting players to watch in the grand history of this great club. He was not here for long, but he was at the peak of his powers when he was.
His 81 goals for Liverpool is only one behind the mercurial and mesmerizing Luis Suarez. What a pair those two would have made, eh?
Torres led the Reds attack during the 2008/09 season that saw Liverpool finish second in the Premier League after a spirited effort for most of the season. Torres scored 14 goals in 24 league appearances that term.
He will join Ryan Babel, Jerzy Dudek, Fabio Aurelio, Martin Skrtel, Djibril Cisse, Gregory Vignal and Sander Westerveld in donning the Red shirt once again.
With the addition of Torres to the squad, there is 1,129 Liverpool appearances between the 8 players that have been selected so far.
The coaching staff will include some iconic names such as John Barnes, Ian Rush, John Aldridge, and the most recent addition, Sven Goran-Eriksson.
Goran-Eriksson will get to live out a lifelong dream as he has gone on record saying he always wanted to manage the club and now he will get the chance. It is proving to be a popular event once again as over 43,000 tickets have been sold for the charity match.
It will be interesting to see what former Liverpool stars fill out the rest of the squad, but the addition of Torres on his own makes it a can’t-miss affair.
The match will kickoff on Saturday March 23 at 3pm GMT.
