Pep Guardiola’s side ensured they maintained the pressure on the leaders and it’s now over to Arsenal to do the business at Sheffield United tomorrow to continue the three-horse race.
For Guardiola, seeing his City side kick into gear at this time of year is nothing new. The brilliant runs of form have become synonymous with City’s make-up, and they are in with a superb chance of success once again.
However, speaking after the game about the title race, Guardiola highlighted that season is different, given Liverpool are not playing catch up and have points on the board already.
“It is about us. We can’t control what Liverpool or Arsenal, Aston Villa or other contenders do, it is about us. We do what we have to do to win today, next Wednesday and Sunday. This team is legendary. Will we do it? I don’t know. We have today more points at this stage than last season.
“The difference is Liverpool have I don’t know how many more points than this stage last season. When the opponent is behaving like this, what can I say, congratulations so far. We will continue to try game by game,” Guardiola said.
This is the most exciting title race for some time and you do get the impression it’s going to go right down to the wire.
With Liverpool playing so well and picking up results despite a huge injury list, you’d have to say they are right in the mix to knock City off their perch this time around. With all the story around Klopp leaving and more, it would seem quite fitting, too.
For City, it’s a case of just keeping going. The two sides have also got to play each other and that could be one of the most explosive battles we’ve seen for years.
If City do come out on top this season, nobody can say it’s been handed to them. Liverpool are right in there and deservedly so and if they come out on top, then Guardiola won’t have too much to complain about.
